“The man who played goalie in the Vasco team with my father, Dondinho, was nicknamed ‘Bilé’. I was three or four at the time I used to watch Bilé in the goals and said, with my thick accent, that when I grow up I wanted to be a goalie like ‘Pile’. The name stuck and when we moved to Bauru, a classmate used to tease me by calling me ‘Pelé’. It means nothing but now it’s known across the world, and I don’t mind it so much.”
